Hey,

Details for the 2009 Spring Steelhead Outing have been set. You can find them on the site under outings & events.

http://www.mffc.org/outings_events/spring_steelhead/

If you have any questions feel free to post them here for others to read as well or you can email me. If you email me with a questions I'll try to put the answers here as well. What's the old saying, for every one person with a question there's 5 more thinking the same thing but never ask ;-)

This should be a good time, decent #'s of fish in the system this year.

Eric Zadorecky

PS- Check out the photo gallery for past spring steelhead outings:

Here's a question I've been asked a couple times. Figured I'd post it here for anyone that has the same one.

"But, a quick question if you should have a moment - do you use the same dropper rig and flies that you used during the Ohio trip - white almost spey looking fly and an egg dropper with appropriate weight and a thill indicator?"

Pretty much any technique will work on the Muskegon. One nice thing about a big system is you'll find just about every type of water, fast, slow, shallow, deep, etc. All techniques can be used on the MO, from C-N-D to spey to indicators. Keep in mind most of these fish will be spawning or very close and will be in fairly shallow water, 3-6', over gravel.

Patterns that work best for this time of year are EGGS!!

Any more questions please post them here on the forum.

Here's a quick map to the access sites below Croton Dam. Few people have asked about this. They only show the boat access sites, there are several walk in locations as well.

Croton to Newaygo:

Newaygo down:

Here's the link where this info came from; lots of additional info there as well.

Now the reports!! By the way, both of these guy are very good if you're ever looking to book a trip.

From Feenstra's website:  http://www.feenstraguideservice.com

March 24, 2009: Muskegon River levels continue to be moderately high and fish are actively taking egg and nymph patterns. Swung flies have been effective from day to day using heaving sinking lines. The fishing was exceptional today for quantity and quality

From Chad Betts website:  http://www.bettsguideservice.com

(3/24)    Water temps are 38- 40 degrees. Some Steelhead are beginning to spawn. Look for redds under overhanging trees near the bank. Fishing pocket water and tailouts has proven to be very effective over the past few days. Lots of new Steelhead are expected to show up later this week. Reports from the lower river and Muskegon Lake sound promising!
Over the last few days, Steelhead fishing has been inconsistent but at times very good. Ex. On Monday we were 13 for 16 float fishing with spawn. Both Larry and Barry landed a great number of bright chrome spring steelhead. The next day (Tuesday) the majority of our fish that Brian and Jack landed were darker males with one lone chrome hen. It seems you may go long stretches without a bite and then hook 5 or 6 in the very next run in a concentrated area. There appears to be good pockets of steelhead moving through with blank spots in between. Over the next few days, fishing should become more consistent as water temperatures rise.
Floats and spawn has been our best producer, however, fly fishing with stone flies has also been good at times, especially in the afternoon.
Higher water levels from last week have brought a fair number of chrome Spring Steelhead up from the lower River. Croton Dam to Pine St. has been fishing the best at this time. The Pier heads in Muskegon are also fishing very well for Steelhead. Spring Steelhead are entering the river daily for the upcoming spawning season in good numbers. Length of day light and warming water temps should get steelies on the move. Stone flies and egg patterns have been working well for fly fishing. Floats and spawn doing the best with water temps still being in the mid 30's. We are forecasted to have much warmer temps this week...
