SUMMARY:September Activities Meeting - Glen Easterbrook Featured Tier
DESCRIPTION:September Activities night features: \n \n\nTying a foam attractor with our Featured Tier- Glen Easterbrook — Click here to download Glen’s pattern. There will be a limited number of kits available for tying.\nOpen gym casting.\n\n \n\nBeginning fly tying will be Back To Basics with a Pheasant Tail Nymph lead by Ken Harfoot! Everything you need is provided.\n\n\nHi\, Glen Easterbrook here.  Ready to tie a great fall fly ? \nThe GFA (General Foam Attractor) Hopper was developed by Walter Wiese of Parks Fly Shop in Montana. As far as hopper patterns go\, the GFA is incredibly easy to tie and really does the trick. The GFA Hopper can be tied to imitate a hopper using natural colored foam. It also makes for an excellent cricket pattern when using darker (dark brown and black) foam. \nIt is a fairly easy fly to tie.  We will try to tie it in a couple of variations to show natural bug colors\, crazy colors that old eyes can see easily\, and natural colors with different colored hotspots.  Thread colors are somewhat important as the thread wraps make the segmented body.  So if you tie a tan foam body then tan thread is preferred to be used.  If you want to tie a yellow body fly then bring some yellow. Etc. \nFishing these can take a bit of finesse.  The grass hopper is a terrestrial\, a land based bug.  It’s when they misstep and fall into the river from the sides of grassy banks that they become a meal for fish.  With that in mind you should be fishing these up against the bank\, possibly onto the grass and then pulling them gently into the river.  Sometimes they will induce a strike when ‘twitched’ because they naturally want to swim back to safety.  They also work well as an indicator.  Foam fly floating above a nymph hanging below. \nClick for Easterbrook’s GFA Hopper Pattern \n\n*MFFC business meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. EST\, learn about upcoming events\, volunteer opportunities\, hear fishing reports\, and general Club information. The speaker will take the floor around 8:00 p.m. EST.* \n\nCan’t make it in-person? SUMMARY:March Speaker Meeting - Steven Arnoczky
DESCRIPTION:This is an interactive event. Bring your vise and tying materials. Foam bodies provided by the speaker. \nClick here for the pattern. \nSteven Arnoczky DVM is a retired professor of veterinary surgery from Michigan State University. He began fly fishing in the Catskill region of New York (Beaverkill\, Willowemoc\, and Delaware rivers) before moving to Michigan. He has\nfished many of the famous Western trout rivers as well as fishing for steelhead in British Columbia\, Atlantic salmon in Quebec\, bonefish in Belize\, and snook and redfish in Florida. From June to September he routinely fishes the Muskegon River and his home waters of the Grand River for his favorite prey\, smallmouth bass. \nHis favorite top water bass fly is the ‘stealth bomber’. The stealth bomber was developed by Georgia fly fishing guide\, Kent Edmonds in the early 1990’s . It is an easy fly to tie and does not use any exotic materials. Its unique action and bubble trail is a deadly attractor for bass\, pike\, bluegill\, and most warm water species. \n \nThis presentation will go over the materials and basic steps to tie the stealth bomber as well as some modifications I have made to develop the ‘stealth frog.’ I will also discuss my set up to fish these flies as well as showing videos that show the action of the ‘stealth bomber’ flies as well some fish catching action. \n\n*MFFC business meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. EST\, learn about upcoming events\, volunteer opportunities\, hear fishing reports\, and general Club information. SUMMARY:Dick Schot New Member Outing at Wa Wa Sum
DESCRIPTION:Individuals that were not able to make it this year\, are still eligible next year. \n\nMichigan Fly Fishing Club – New Members Outing\nThe MFFC New Members outing will be held again at Michigan State University’s WaWaSum Lodge.  The lodge is located about 7 miles East of Grayling\, MI on the Au Sable River. \nWe will be checking in on Wednesday the 6th of May after 3 PM and checking out on the Saturday\, May 9th by 11 AM. \nThe cost is $ 290 per person.  This includes meals and lodging. \nMake your check out to Michigan Fly Fishing Club (or MFFC).  I would like to have the checks dated May 1\, 2026.  I give the payment to the club right after the trip.  If you have to cancel I can just return your check or rip it up.  When you date your check for May 1 you know I will present it to the Club after the trip.  Your check is your reservation.  I am starting the reservation list now. \nIn the past we have asked for donations for our club guides as they work very hard to provide quality\, expertise and resources to the experience. \nWe do not have speakers lined up yet\, but will hopefully provide for a presentation every night. \nThe accomodations are separate rooms that hold three to four people per room.  We do the best we can to shuffle the assignments around in order to give everyone an appropriate space. \nWhat to bring:\nFly fishing equipment: \n5 wt rod will do nicely.  This is mostly dry fly fishing.  Line and leaders for surface work. \nWaders \nVest with fly fishing tools \nSmall net (Optional) \nSun Glasses \nMoney for flies etc…. \nOther stuff: \nOf course Rain Gear. \nSleeping bag or sheets.  There are bedspreads but no sheets.  These are TWIN beds.  I have found that the sleeping bag is the best option.  Sleep on top of the bed.  No muss no fuss.  There are pillows\, I would not trust them as they are old.  So best bet is to bring your own. \nThere is a large screened in porch.  It has a number of beds on it.  Some have slept there.  Some say it’s nice.  I cannot attest. \nThe porch is a great gathering place to swap stories\, exchange lies and in general plot strategy for fishing. \nExtra pair of dry clothes\, Ive seen people get wet before. \nWading staff is nice to have. \nSleepware…. \nCPAP if needed \nDetails\nWe have lots of room to fish and cast at the lodge.  There are many places along the river to go to for fishing.  There are a few shops in the area for intel and equipment. \nAlso\, if you want to spring for a guide you need to sort that out on your own\, but you can easily take a half day float during this outing. \nContact\nContact details\, please don’t hesitate contacting me with any questions: \nTrip coordinator is myself: \nGlen Easterbrook \nEmail geasterbrook@ameritech.net \nPhone 734-231-5459 \n
