SUMMARY:GLC Fly Casting Development Outing
DESCRIPTION:The Great Lakes Council (GLC) of Fly Fishers International (FFI)\, of which the MFFC is a member\, has announced its plans for a weekend outing in Grayling from Friday\, June 7\, through Sunday\, June 9. \nThe weekend will kick off on Friday at 3 p.m. at Gates Lodge with a fishing and hatch report\, followed late-afternoon and evening fishing on one’s own. \nSaturday’s schedule provided time for wetting a line in the morning prior to a Fly Casting Skills Development Event from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Grayling Fish Hatchery. The GLC will set up the Fly Casting Skills Development Course created by FFI. Direction and instruction will be available from GLC members. Because the Hatchery also will be open to the public\, the GLC also available introductory casting instruction to Hatchery visitors. GLC fly tying vises and materials also will be available for visitors interested in trying their hand at fly tying. \nThe Grayling Fish Hatchery\, which opens to the public on Memorial Day weekend\, features more than 1\,000 Michigan Department of Natural Resources-provided Rainbow Trout in a number of raceways as well as a marsh raceway that houses many turtles and frogs.  Children and teens (age16 and under) are welcome to fish in the Children’s Fishing Pond for free. Kids need to bring their own equipment and bait and practice catch and release only. The hatchery is located at 4890 West North Down River Road in Grayling. \nFollowing the casting event\, there will be ample opportunity to catch Saturday’s evening hatch on the river. \nThe weekend concludes on Sunday with a GLC general membership meeting\, beginning at 10 a.m.\, to be followed by GLC Board Meeting. Both meetings be conducted in the Board Room at Gates Lodge. The meetings will be available via Zoom\, as well. Look for the Zoom link in future communications. \n*Mike Matuszewski is currently MFFC’s GLC representative.*

SUMMARY:Activities Meeting - Ken Harfoot Featured Tyer
DESCRIPTION:Casting is available in the Fly Fishing Training & Education Center (otherwise known as the gym). \n\nTying With Ken Harfoot \nI am taking a step back in time for the March 1st tying session. I was inspired by an article in the Flyfisher magazine 2012 publication. The authors Terry and Roxanne Wilson pulled four patterns from the “Book of the Black Bass\,” (1881) by Dr. James A. Henshall. The most iconic figure in the uniquely American sport of bass fishing is Dr. James A. Henshall. A physician and author of the “Book of the Black Bass” (1881) and other works\, the good doctor abandoned his medical practice at the age of 49 to pursue his passion for the piscato-rial sciences. \nHere are the patterns we will tie as time permits. \nHenshall\nWing: light drab (dove)\nHackle: white\nBody: peacock herl\, gold tip\nTail: peacock sword \nPolka\nWing: guinea\nHackle: scarlet\nBody: scarlet floss\, gold rib\nTail: brown and white fibers (goose wing)\n \nOconomowor\nWing: cinnamon woodcock\nHackle: white\nBody: cream floss\, gold rib\nTail: brown deer tail\n \nOriole\nWing: yellow goose\nHackle: black\nBody: black floss\, gold rib and tip\nTail: black and white \nI was drawn to the poetic writings from a time all but forgotten. This was the closing epilogue: \nBut there are flies\, and enough\, to suit those of every taste\, even should the angler be so fastidious and dainty as\n“Ye Sunberry Fisher\,” as described by Punch:\n“Ye Sunberry fisher has flies of all feathers\,\nFor all sorts of seasons\, in all sorts of weathers.\nFlies when ye Springtide is blustrie and showerie\,\nFlies when ye Summer is grassie and bowerie\,\nFlies when ye Autumn is golden and grainie\,\nFor hot weather\, cold weather\, mistie\, or rainie.\nRed-spinner\, palmer\, black peacock and gray\,\nYellow dun\, golden dun\, March brown\, and May\,\nSand-fly and stone-fly\, and alder and gnat\,\nBlack midge and marlow bug-all round his hat.” \nFor a printable copy of this visit the MFFC fly tying pattern library. \nFor a copy of the original book in all it’s glory\, click here. \n\n\nMFFC Meeting \nJoin via Zoom\nhttps://zoom.us/j/94894893998?pwd=TGYrWnJyd0dCelVxbXdYU1lVVmd5dz09 \nMeeting ID: 948 9489 3998\nPasscode: Jvq0q6

SUMMARY:FFF Fly Tying Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are requested for our booth at the Great Lakes Fly Fishing Show. We set up a booth for kids to learn how to tie a fly. We are a very popular booth with many returning customers. We generally tie various designs of wooly buggers. They are very easy to tie and easy to show a kid how to do it. We will teach you how to do it. \nContact: Spencer Vanderhoof \nPlease sign up to volunteer so we can get the list of volunteers to show registration the day before the set up.
