SUMMARY:Dick Schot New Member Outing at Wa Wa Sum
DESCRIPTION:Individuals that were not able to make it this year\, are still eligible next year. \n\nMichigan Fly Fishing Club – New Members Outing\nThe MFFC New Members outing will be held again at Michigan State University’s WaWaSum Lodge.  The lodge is located about 7 miles East of Grayling\, MI on the Au Sable River. \nWe will be checking in on Wednesday the 6th of May after 3 PM and checking out on the Saturday\, May 9th by 11 AM. \nThe cost is $ 290 per person.  This includes meals and lodging. \nMake your check out to Michigan Fly Fishing Club (or MFFC).  I would like to have the checks dated May 1\, 2026.  I give the payment to the club right after the trip.  If you have to cancel I can just return your check or rip it up.  When you date your check for May 1 you know I will present it to the Club after the trip.  Your check is your reservation.  I am starting the reservation list now. \nIn the past we have asked for donations for our club guides as they work very hard to provide quality\, expertise and resources to the experience. \nWe do not have speakers lined up yet\, but will hopefully provide for a presentation every night. \nThe accomodations are separate rooms that hold three to four people per room.  We do the best we can to shuffle the assignments around in order to give everyone an appropriate space. \nWhat to bring:\nFly fishing equipment: \n5 wt rod will do nicely.  This is mostly dry fly fishing.  Line and leaders for surface work. \nWaders \nVest with fly fishing tools \nSmall net (Optional) \nSun Glasses \nMoney for flies etc…. \nOther stuff: \nOf course Rain Gear. \nSleeping bag or sheets.  There are bedspreads but no sheets.  These are TWIN beds.  I have found that the sleeping bag is the best option.  Sleep on top of the bed.  No muss no fuss.  There are pillows\, I would not trust them as they are old.  So best bet is to bring your own. \nThere is a large screened in porch.  It has a number of beds on it.  Some have slept there.  Some say it’s nice.  I cannot attest. \nThe porch is a great gathering place to swap stories\, exchange lies and in general plot strategy for fishing. \nExtra pair of dry clothes\, Ive seen people get wet before. \nWading staff is nice to have. \nSleepware…. \nCPAP if needed \nDetails\nWe have lots of room to fish and cast at the lodge.  There are many places along the river to go to for fishing.  There are a few shops in the area for intel and equipment. \nAlso\, if you want to spring for a guide you need to sort that out on your own\, but you can easily take a half day float during this outing. \nContact\nContact details\, please don’t hesitate contacting me with any questions: \nTrip coordinator is myself: \nGlen Easterbrook \nEmail geasterbrook@ameritech.net \nPhone 734-231-5459 \n

SUMMARY:Smallmouth Outing
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Smallmouth Outing\nPort Austin\, MI\nThursday May 14 though Sunday May 17\, 2026.\nA list of recommended equipment is below for getting you going. \nIf you have other preferences or favorites\, go ahead and bring them. \nHope to see you up on the Flats! \nCost\nThe cost of the Outing is $55 for Short sleeve and $60 if choosing Long-Sleeve shirt\, made payable to Renee Gall by April 15\, 2026. \nThis includes: \n\nAnnual Smallmouth Outing T-Shirt\nPizza party Friday night around campfire (BYOB)\nSaturday is Texas BBQ\nFirewood\, paper products\, etc.\n\nRegistration deadline is April 8th. No refunds given after the registration deadline. \nContact Renee at reneeschatzleygall@gmail.com or  Bob Gall at YooperBob.BG@gmail.com as co-chair. \nAccommodations\nWe typically reserve rooms at the Blue Spruce Motel: \nBlue Spruce Motel & Horseshoe Cabins\n8527 Lake St\, Port Austin\, MI 48467\n989-738-8650 \nEmail Stephanie at the motel; she will send an annual email blast around March 1\, 2026.\, \nFor suggestions of other accommodations\, please ask Renee. \nVolunteering\nMost of us on this outing are seasoned anglers\, and know these waters. We understand the techniques that are used to catch these fish in the various spawning stages. There are a few newbies to this outing and a few that have had some struggles in the past at catching these “smallies” in Port Austin. There is a definite technique to learn in fishing for them\, at this time of the year and place. \nI am looking for volunteers to pair up with these anglers to show the techniques that you\nhave learned\, so everyone can have a great and successful fishing experience. Once they understand and get the feel and start catching fish\, the confidence level rises and they are on their way to a fun and successful weekend of fishing. \nEquipment Recommendations\n\nRods: Bass: 5\, 6\, 7\, or 8 weights – Carp: 7 weight or heavier.\nWaders: Still early in the season\, could be warm or cold; & Chest Waders for sure.\nRain Gear/Wading Jacket: Might be a great idea. Rain is almost a possibility.\nWading Boots: Make sure you have something that will work well on rocks. You will be fishing and wading amongst various rock fields and debris.\nWading Staff: Very much recommended.\nWater Vessels: Due to the high water the last few years\, kayaks\, canoes\, and other water vessels are a great a choice; and make sure to have your life jacket with you. One thing to remember weather can turn nasty so always be prepared.\nLine: The recommendation for the style of flats fishing we do in and around Port Austin is either Floating or Intermediate Lines if the waters are low and even high. If the waters are really high\, sinking lines work great or sink tip lines.\nLeader & Tippet: A straight fluorocarbon line for a leader (for streamers)\, for nymphs the Borger Leader or a Six 6’s western leader (great for windy conditions) which also works good for dries if we end up dry fly fishing (very rare though)\, & the tippet you will want it to be strong enough to hold up with the fish & against the debris that is in the bays (0x\, 1x\, 3x or 8lb\, 12lb\, or 15lb Fluorocarbon)\n\nImportant Notes: If the water temp is 60 to 65 degrees\, then spawning time is on in the shallows. But if the temp is below 60\, then the males will be on the beds and the females in the deeper water (but still able to wade). \nEmerald Shiners and Black Nose Dace’s are the main source of food in Lake Huron. \nFly Recommendations\nFor Smallmouth\n\nGood color choices for flies would be: Chartreuse\, Olive\, Brown\, Yellow\, Purple\, Blue\, or a combination of colors mentioned. (colors depend on the weather & water conditions)\nStreamers (sizes 3/0 thru 10): Minnow Patterns (various Clousers\, Griz’s CT\, Mickey Finn\, Black Nose Dace\, Emerald Shiner\, Griz’s Thumper Series\, Murdich Minnow or a Darter Pattern). Sculpin Flies in Olive\, Brown\, Black & Yellow. Leech Patternsin colors of Olive\, Purple\, Brown or Black. Nymphs (Sizes 12\, 10\, & 8): Sparrow\, Prince Nymph\, my Red Headed Prince Nymph\, Zug Bug\, Pheasant Tail\, Clouser’s Swimming Nymph\, Little Black Stones various Scuds; & any type of Hex\nNymphs Attractor Patterns (sizes 8 to 3/0): Sparkle Grubs\, Barr’s Meat Whistle\, Mickey Finn\, Foam Bomber\, Griz’s Nerdy Hillbilly Streamer\, Griz’s Bad Hair Day\, Schultz’s Kickin’ Chicken\, & Lynch’s D & D.\nCrayfish (Sizes 1/0\, 2\, 4\, & 6): Darkes Sugar Creek Crayfish\, Clouser Crayfish\, Griz’s “DSP” Crayfish or if you have a favorite that will work also.\n\nFor Carp\nYou can use above Nymphs\, (make sure they are weighted though)\, leeches\, Clousers\, or even Crayfish.

SUMMARY:Wisconsin Driftless Outing
DESCRIPTION:Sept 20\, 2026 – Sept 24\, 2026 (5 nights)\nJoin us for fishing the renowned “driftless area” in western Wisconsin\, approximately a 500 mile driving distance from our metro Detroit area.  There are 13\,000 miles of streams and creeks in the near vicinity of Viroqua\, Wisconsin\, offering easy wading\, an abundance of native trout\,  and a scenic beauty that would be a photographer’s delight. \n____________________________________ \n \nLocation: \nThe Driftless area refers to about 24\,000 sq. miles capturing SW Wisconsin\, SE Minnesota\, NE Iowa\, and NW Illinois.  It is an area that was untouched by glacier flows that occurred thousands of years ago.  It’s a topography characterized by steeply forested hills\, deeply carved river valleys\, spring fed waterfalls\, and some of the coldest trout streams in the country. The area is not the recipient of the leveling and the typical glacier deposits (salt\, clay\, sand \, gravel\, boulders\, etc.) known as “drift”…….hence the name “driftless.”  An estimated 85% of the driftless area resides in Wisconsin.  The central hub of the fly fishing activity lies in the vicinity of the town of Viroqua – the “Grayling” of Wisconsin. \nDates: \nSunday Sep 20\, 2026 through Thurs Sept 24. Departing Friday\, Sept 25.  (5 nights lodging) \nLodging: \nNatureNooks Retreat  (www.naturenooksretreat.com) \nLocated about 9 miles east of Viroqua\, on the West Fork of the Kickapoo River.  Visit the website for a visual of the property and its amenities. Cost per person per night could vary from $50 – $70 depending on total attendees. \nTransportation: \nDriving distance is approximately 500 miles from metro Detroit. \nMeals \nBreakfasts will be provided each morning and brown bag lunches made available daily.  In addition\, three dinner meals will be planned.  Plan to eat out for dinners on the remaining days. \nGuides \nGuides (for at least a half day) are encouraged and will be at your own expense.  Rates are published at www.driftlessangler.com \nTrip Budget: \nBoarding (5 nights lodging at Nature Nooks Retreat) (no taxes) \nFood (5 breakfasts\, 4 brown bag lunches\, 3 dinners) \nTOTAL:     $450 estimated (More specific cost will be forthcoming.) \nAdditional costs to be incurred include:  Guide service\,  misc. meals\, Wisconsin fishing license ($27.50 for first time out of state buyers)\, transportation costs (gas and toll charges). \nAction Needed: \nAs we solidify lodging agreements\, a deposit of $50 will soon be requested. As of now\, the trip may accommodate up to 16 members\, utilizing lodging in addition to Nature Nooks Retreat. \nClub Contact: \nJerry Deputat  9250 N.
