SUMMARY:October Activities Meeting - Featured Tyer Todd Schotts
DESCRIPTION:October Activities night features: \n\nTying a with our Featured Tier- Todd Schotts — Click here to download the pattern. There will be a limited number of kits available for tying.\nOpen gym casting.\nBeginning fly tying will lead by Ken Harfoot! Everything you need is provided.\n\n \n\nGriz’s “DSP Mr. Softie Crawfish” is unique because it represents crawfish molting times. Crawfish molt 10 to 15 times a year\, making them very vulnerable to Bass and Trout\, who love to chow on them. Crawfish live to be around 30 years old – that is a lot of molting! Molting crawfish colors can vary\, ranging from red\, orange\, blue/purple\, to even all olive. \nThe one we will be tying at the October Activities Meeting is the blue/purple version which I frequently use for bass fishing. The watershed determines the color that should be fished\, based on the vegetation they consume. I love to tie these amazing flies\, as they work well. This is in the same series with my regular DSP Crawfish. \nTodd will personally be supplying the yarn\, zonker strips\, and the hooks. If you have your own supplies or variations of materials\, please feel free to bring them along with you. \nMake sure you use 6/0 or 140 denier thread in black or dark brown to tie this fly. If you have purple or blue\, that works to. Come tie along with me and sling bobbins for the October Activity night! \n\nDownload the pattern and supplies list here. \n  \n\n*MFFC business meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. EST\, learn about upcoming events\, volunteer opportunities\, hear fishing reports\, and general Club information. The speaker will take the floor around 8:00 p.m. EST.* \n\n  \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://zoom.us/j/94894893998?pwd=TGYrWnJyd0dCelVxbXdYU1lVVmd5dz09 \nMeeting ID: 948 9489 3998\nPasscode: Jvq0q6 \nFind your local number: https://zoom.us/u/atejXzaJi

SUMMARY:September Activities Meeting - Glen Easterbrook Featured Tier
DESCRIPTION:September Activities night features: \n \n\nTying a foam attractor with our Featured Tier- Glen Easterbrook — Click here to download Glen’s pattern. There will be a limited number of kits available for tying.\nOpen gym casting.\n\n \n\nBeginning fly tying will be Back To Basics with a Pheasant Tail Nymph lead by Ken Harfoot! Everything you need is provided.\n\n\nHi\, Glen Easterbrook here.  Ready to tie a great fall fly ? \nThe GFA (General Foam Attractor) Hopper was developed by Walter Wiese of Parks Fly Shop in Montana. As far as hopper patterns go\, the GFA is incredibly easy to tie and really does the trick. The GFA Hopper can be tied to imitate a hopper using natural colored foam. It also makes for an excellent cricket pattern when using darker (dark brown and black) foam. \nIt is a fairly easy fly to tie.  We will try to tie it in a couple of variations to show natural bug colors\, crazy colors that old eyes can see easily\, and natural colors with different colored hotspots.  Thread colors are somewhat important as the thread wraps make the segmented body.  So if you tie a tan foam body then tan thread is preferred to be used.  If you want to tie a yellow body fly then bring some yellow. Etc. \nFishing these can take a bit of finesse.  The grass hopper is a terrestrial\, a land based bug.  It’s when they misstep and fall into the river from the sides of grassy banks that they become a meal for fish.  With that in mind you should be fishing these up against the bank\, possibly onto the grass and then pulling them gently into the river.  Sometimes they will induce a strike when ‘twitched’ because they naturally want to swim back to safety.  They also work well as an indicator.  Foam fly floating above a nymph hanging below. \nClick for Easterbrook’s GFA Hopper Pattern \n\n*MFFC business meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. EST\, learn about upcoming events\, volunteer opportunities\, hear fishing reports\, and general Club information. The speaker will take the floor around 8:00 p.m. EST.* \n\nCan’t make it in-person? SUMMARY:September Speaker Meeting - Todd Schotts on Frogging
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! \nThe Academic Speaker Calendar kicks off with Todd Schotts\, current president\, presenting: \nFrogging: Fresh Water Explosions \nprogram with a Q&A following \n \nThis presentation of “Frogging Freshwater Explosions” is revised to include in depth info on conditions\, tying techniques\, what types of weeds hold bass\, and rigging your gear to achieve a great time for Frogging.   \nI use these techniques when just fishing on various lakes and when I am Kayak Tournament Fishing. Both conditions I have been blessed and successful. I actually came in first out of all the spin casters in a tournament using my fly rod only\, frogs\, and using info from this presentation.\n\nAside from my original frog\, I now have a rattling frog and a swimming frog. This style of fishing is a passion for me.\n\nTodd Schotts Fishing Report:  I am a production custom fly tyer. I own & operate GrizzlyFlies by Schottsie. I am on the Pro Teams of Anadromous Fly Company\,  Norvise\, UV Craft\,  and TFO.  I am currently the President of the Michigan Fly Fishing Club\, plus help out with various events and am Chairperson for Guest Tyers for the Midwest Fly Fishing Expo. I am the past President of the Huron River Fishing Association (2 years) where we won the MUCC Conservation Club of the year during my term.  Otherwise I am just a bass bum. I love to chase bass in my kayak\, tie flies\, and be with my loved ones.\n\n*MFFC business meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. EST\, learn about upcoming events\, volunteer opportunities\, hear fishing reports\, and general Club information. The speaker will take the floor around 8:00 p.m. EST.* \n\nTopic: Todd Schotts Teaches Frogging \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://zoom.us/j/94894893998?pwd=TGYrWnJyd0dCelVxbXdYU1lVVmd5dz09 \nMeeting ID: 948 9489 3998\nPasscode: Jvq0q6 \nFind your local number: https://zoom.us/u/atejXzaJi

The goal is to give members the options for various ways to fish and have a great time. Hope to see everyone out on the water!! \nMeet Up Info – coming soon \nNOTE – BELOW LOCATIONS COULD CHANGE DUE TO CONDITIONS OF THE WATERSHED \nJuly 23rd – Delhi Metro Park – Ann Arbor– Huron River – 4pm to Close \nHere are the meeting details:  \nNON–MEETING WEDNESDAYS ON THE WATER 5th Stop Delhi Metro Park 4pm to close.\n\nOur next stop on the “Summer Tour 2025 of the Non–Meeting Wednesdays on the Water” will take us to “Delhi Metro Park” on Wednesday July 23rd.\n\nThis park system is within the Huron-Clinton system of Metroparks; Delhi is an 81-acre park that is located on the Huron River and is northwest of Ann Arbor. The park system boasts picnic areas\, picnic shelters\, swings\, slides\, river fishing\, canoe rental and softball diamonds.\n\nBack in 1835\, there was a sawmill that was located on the Huron River at this site. Then Norman Gooddale purchased the mill for $50 in 1835 and added a flour mill to the site. Then Jacob Doremus plotted a village adjacent to the mill in 1836 named Michigan Village\, although the name was changed to Delhi shortly afterward. In 1842\, Gooddale acquired all the unsold lots. His son Frank expanded the mill\, shipping flour to New England and employing 20 people; in 1880\, Delhi Mills shipped 41\,000 barrels of flour on the on the rail system known as Michigan Central Railroad. In 1883\, Delhi had 2 flour mills\, a woolen mill and a saw mill\, taking power from a dam 150 feet long with a 7-foot head and producing 140 horsepower when all mills run at once. The only thing left of the Delhi Mills is the area known as “Delhi Rapids” which is the remains of the collapsed mill dam that once powered Delhi Mills.\n\nThe park is divided into 2 sections; there is West Delhi and East Delhi with East Delhi Rd separating the 2 sides. We will be in East Delhi\, to turn into the entrance\, you will want to turn off Huron River Drive onto southeast Delhi Road\, cross the bridge and turn left into East Delhi. You will need a daily or seasonal pass to be able to get into the park. Just for your FYI the park hours are 8am to 10pm. Once you clear the “Check Station” we will just be parking in the middle of the parking lot for a rough staging area. Remember\, this is just a general meet up area as we may already be out fishing.\n\nThe gear you want to bring is rods usually in 4\, 5\, or 6 weight fly rods with floating line on the reels; plus a net to aid in your landing of your fish. I will be wearing waders to wade in this area\, if you feel comfortable enough to wet wade\, you are more than welcome too. It is easy to wade and fish in West Delhi which is past the canoe rentals across from the East Delhi entrance. But I also like fishing where we will be parking\, in the East Delhi area. The flies I use in this area range from my topwater White Ephron dry fly\, Roberts Yellow Drake\, Hoppers\, Poppers\, and any Topwater Flies. I really like using the Edmonds Stealth Foam Bomber in various sizes. If you decide to bring nymphs\, pheasant tails work great\, along with various buggy nymphs. I like getting into the river in the middle of East Delhi and wading down from there.\n\nOne thing that is nice this time of year on the Huron the Hex usually starts appearing this time of year on the Huron with the Ephron’s following afterwards. They usually kick off from 7pm to 8pm if water conditions and weather conditions are working together.\n\nWe hope to see you out there on the river; fishing with your fellow club members and having a great time. If you are not a member of the Michigan Fly Fishing Club\, you are more than welcome to come out and join us. You can see how much fun we have\, and hopefully we will see you as fellow club members soon. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Todd Schotts or Ken Harfoot. Tight Lines.\n\nDATES ARE SUBJECT TO CANCELLATION OR RESCHEDULING DUE TO SEVERE INCLIMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS\n\n\nUpcoming Meetings:  \nJuly 30th – Pontiac Lake – Waterford – at the Boat Ramp – 4pm to Close \nAugust 6th Normal Meeting in Northville \nAugust 13th – Gallup Park – Ann Arbor – Huron River – 4pm to Close \nAugust 20th – Pointe Mouillee State Game Area – Rockwood – 4pm to Close \nAugust 27th –  Nankin Lake – Livonia – 3pm to Close \n(you can get to the location earlier than noted if you would like to) \nPLEASE NOTE \ndates can get cancelled due to weather conditions so stay tuned to the weather \n Todd Schotts at 248-961-4164 or Ken Harfoot at 248-467-9403 \n*watch the website\, this event page\, and your email for updates* \n

SUMMARY:April Speaker Meeting - Peter Albertson
DESCRIPTION:THERE WILL BE NO ZOOM TONIGHT AS THE ZOOM TEAM IS ON VACATION \n“My first fly fishing adventure was at the access ramp on the main stream at the County Road 489 bridge.   The water was fast\, deep\, and the fish were rising on the far bank of the river.  After I was chest deep and losing my footing while being gently swayed down stream and I still not being close to cast that last 30’\, well\, that set my goal to be able to cast and set the strongest desire to learn how.  I am still learning- I just can’t put what I can’t remember into my cast- but it is better than that first day at the bridge…I think???”\nStay Safe\,\nPeter Albertson \n  \n\n*MFFC business meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. EST\, learn about upcoming events\, volunteer opportunities\, hear fishing reports\, and general Club information. SUMMARY:March Speaker Meeting - Bob Long
DESCRIPTION:Bob Long will be presenting 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water. \nI go fishing to catch fish. The tug is\, indeed\, my drug.  And I take people fishing to catch fish. \nI’ve been fishing since age 5\, fly fishing since age 12. I started getting decent at it around age 35. Then I suffered a setback when I started believing\, “Hey\, I’m pretty good at this.” Took 10 years to dig my way out of that emotional and mental hole. \nDuring the 90s to early 2000s\, I wrote for most of the existing fly fishing and fishing mags\, newsletters and newspapers\, and gave seminars at fly fishing and fishing shows\, and in Fly Fishing shops. Pleasant enough. By 2010 I switched to mainly conducting On-The-Water fly fishing workshops. \nBeginning in 1999 I spent 20 years taking people fishing; kids (8-12)\, teens\, adults\, seniors\, and People with Disabilities of all kinds (teaching and mentoring\, not guiding). This was through a May – September program I created and ran with the City of Chicago called\, Mayor Daley’s Fish’N Kids. \nThat was supremely and deeply rewarding and affected how I viewed my fishing and teaching. I ceased to be an experienced fishing adult and became a kid goin’ fishin’ again. \nI gladly share what I’ve learned over time with those who may have an interest; shared as considerations only\, not doctrine. As I learned early on\, “Sharing\, with love and compassion\, is what we are supposed to do in this Life. \n\n*MFFC business meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. EST\, learn about upcoming events\, volunteer opportunities\, hear fishing reports\, and general Club information.
