SUMMARY:AuSable River Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE PRE-REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT \nEach September\, on the Saturday after Labor Day\, the Michigan Fly Fishing Club spends time together with many other fly fishers from around the state to walk areas of our beloved AuSable River and clean debris from its river bottom and banks. The cleanup\, sponsored by the Anglers of the AuSable\, is a wonderful way to give something back to the river we fish during the summer. \nWe wade ‘beats’ that run from one access point to another and with our poking sticks and plastic rubbish bags to collect items that have been dropped or lost during the summer. Between beer cans\, flip flops and the occasional bathing suit its always an adventure. \nSign up by Email:  Josh@GatesLodge.com\nOr call:  989-348-8462 \nEvents get under way at 10 a.m. meeting at Gates Lodge. \nFood will be available at Gates at noon. \nSupport the Club by wearing your MFFC gear.

SUMMARY:March Activities Meeting - Scott Freeburg Featured Tyer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for activities night! After the brief meeting\, casting will be available (with or without instruction) in the Casting Training & Education Center in the gym\, Ken Harfoot will be leading beginning tying\, and Scott Freeburg will be our Featured Tyer on Zoom. \n\nThis Parachute fly was introduced to me by guide friend Chuck Scribner last year at hex hatch time. We ran into each other at a breakfast spot when I was heading home and of course talked about recent fishing adventures. \nHe had bought a bunch from Gate’s and was using them to imitate Isonychia’s on the Au Sable. And of course\, having great success too. \nHe was kind enough to give me one and encouraged me to tie some.  So I saved it for later when I could try and copy it at my tying desk. \nI didn’t get a chance to trout fish again until August but by then I had tied a bunch to test out. \nIso hatches start in late June and continue through August. The hatches are an evening thing so visibility and floatation are important. This thing worked as described and again I’m so thankful to Chuck for sharing it with me. \nOh yeah and one last thing. When I was up there\, I went to Gate’s to buy some more of the originals. Had to ask for help finding them because they evidently don’t keep them out on display and they only had very few and only in one size. Draw your own conclusions….. \n  \nPurple Patriot Parachute \nHook: Size 10 1x fine dry fly \nThread: 8/0 Uni Purple \nWing: Hi-Vis light gray \nTail: Medium Dun hackle fibers \nAbdomen: 3 sections: Opal tinsel\, purple thread\, opal tinsel \nParachute Hackle: Medium Dun \nThorax: Purple thread \nClick here to download a printable version of the pattern. \n  \nClick here to join via Zoom.

SUMMARY:September Speaker Meeting - Niall McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:MFFC welcomes back Niall McCarthy\, he last presented in December of 2020 when we were all at home Zooming our meetings.\n\nNiall first learned to fly fish on the Au Sable River with his dad when he was 10 years old. His dad spent his time untangling Niall’s tangles\, while Niall thrashed the water with something that resembled a cast. During that trip they got lost on the South Branch\, caught a few fish\, watched an intoxicated canoeist jump off the Stephan bridge\, and most importantly\, Niall was imprinted with the joy of fly fishing. \n\nBetween that trip and now\, Niall has fished from the Kispiox River to the flats of the Bahamas and many places in between. His favorite way to fish is to swing flies for Steelhead in Michigan\, and he never passes up an opportunity to fish for carp in the crystal clear waters of Grand Traverse Bay. Watching Smallmouth demolish divers and poppers is the ultimate way for Niall to spend his summer days. When he really wants to be humbled\, he’ll throw gigantic Musky flies until his arm falls off. The Hendricks hatch on the Au Sable in May is always memorable.\n\nAfter spending four years learning the fly fishing business from the ground up\, Niall felt confident to run his own shop but better in every way…cue Motor City Anglers\, founded in 2019. Niall is proud to have given countless anglers instruction for single hand casting and spey casting. These anglers  range from total greenhorns to some pretty good casters. Niall is delighted every time he watches an angler’s casting progress.\n\n\nYou can find Niall at our upcoming speaker meeting or visit him at Motor City Angers Fly Shop.

SUMMARY:Activities Meeting - Ken Harfoot Featured Tyer
DESCRIPTION:Casting is available in the Fly Fishing Training & Education Center (otherwise known as the gym). \n\nTying With Ken Harfoot \nI am taking a step back in time for the March 1st tying session. I was inspired by an article in the Flyfisher magazine 2012 publication. The authors Terry and Roxanne Wilson pulled four patterns from the “Book of the Black Bass\,” (1881) by Dr. James A. Henshall. The most iconic figure in the uniquely American sport of bass fishing is Dr. James A. Henshall. A physician and author of the “Book of the Black Bass” (1881) and other works\, the good doctor abandoned his medical practice at the age of 49 to pursue his passion for the piscato-rial sciences. \nHere are the patterns we will tie as time permits. \nHenshall\nWing: light drab (dove)\nHackle: white\nBody: peacock herl\, gold tip\nTail: peacock sword \nPolka\nWing: guinea\nHackle: scarlet\nBody: scarlet floss\, gold rib\nTail: brown and white fibers (goose wing)\n \nOconomowor\nWing: cinnamon woodcock\nHackle: white\nBody: cream floss\, gold rib\nTail: brown deer tail\n \nOriole\nWing: yellow goose\nHackle: black\nBody: black floss\, gold rib and tip\nTail: black and white \nI was drawn to the poetic writings from a time all but forgotten. This was the closing epilogue: \nBut there are flies\, and enough\, to suit those of every taste\, even should the angler be so fastidious and dainty as\n“Ye Sunberry Fisher\,” as described by Punch:\n“Ye Sunberry fisher has flies of all feathers\,\nFor all sorts of seasons\, in all sorts of weathers.\nFlies when ye Springtide is blustrie and showerie\,\nFlies when ye Summer is grassie and bowerie\,\nFlies when ye Autumn is golden and grainie\,\nFor hot weather\, cold weather\, mistie\, or rainie.\nRed-spinner\, palmer\, black peacock and gray\,\nYellow dun\, golden dun\, March brown\, and May\,\nSand-fly and stone-fly\, and alder and gnat\,\nBlack midge and marlow bug-all round his hat.” \nFor a printable copy of this visit the MFFC fly tying pattern library. \nFor a copy of the original book in all it’s glory\, click here. \n\n\nMFFC Meeting \nJoin via Zoom\nhttps://zoom.us/j/94894893998?pwd=TGYrWnJyd0dCelVxbXdYU1lVVmd5dz09 \nMeeting ID: 948 9489 3998\nPasscode: Jvq0q6

DESCRIPTION:Jerry Regan is starting us off back at our Clarenceville Middle School venue! \nJerry is a third generation commercial tier\, originally from Grayling\, Michigan. Jerry’s most favorite show being the Michigan Fly Fishing Club’s Midwest Fly Fishing Expo\, of course. \nAlong with the historical flies that Jerry has saved\, he has (sometimes through trial and error) created several flies that will be in the Grayling area for quite some time.
