SUMMARY:September Speaker Meeting - Niall McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:MFFC welcomes back Niall McCarthy\, he last presented in December of 2020 when we were all at home Zooming our meetings.\n\nNiall first learned to fly fish on the Au Sable River with his dad when he was 10 years old. His dad spent his time untangling Niall’s tangles\, while Niall thrashed the water with something that resembled a cast. During that trip they got lost on the South Branch\, caught a few fish\, watched an intoxicated canoeist jump off the Stephan bridge\, and most importantly\, Niall was imprinted with the joy of fly fishing. \n\nBetween that trip and now\, Niall has fished from the Kispiox River to the flats of the Bahamas and many places in between. His favorite way to fish is to swing flies for Steelhead in Michigan\, and he never passes up an opportunity to fish for carp in the crystal clear waters of Grand Traverse Bay. Watching Smallmouth demolish divers and poppers is the ultimate way for Niall to spend his summer days. When he really wants to be humbled\, he’ll throw gigantic Musky flies until his arm falls off. The Hendricks hatch on the Au Sable in May is always memorable.\n\nAfter spending four years learning the fly fishing business from the ground up\, Niall felt confident to run his own shop but better in every way…cue Motor City Anglers\, founded in 2019. Niall is proud to have given countless anglers instruction for single hand casting and spey casting. These anglers  range from total greenhorns to some pretty good casters. His presentation will be Fly Fishing The Summer Heat In Northeast Michigan. \nKelly has owned Streamside Custom Rod & Guide Service since 1992. He lives in Fairview Michigan and is a full time fly fishing guide in Northern Michigan. His home water is the Au Sable River.  “I fish and guide the entire system from Grayling to Lake Huron – Trout\, Smallmouth Bass\, Atlantic Salmon\, Steelhead\,” said Kelly. “I build custom fly rods and sell retail fly fishing equipment.” \nHe also spends the winter months in Arkansas guiding on the White and Norfork Rivers. DESCRIPTION:Anthony Ruela\, a former Western North Carolina fly shop manager and trout fishing guide\,  is excited to share his knowledge of Western Carolina streams and the nature of the trout\, smallmouth\, & musky that inhabit their waters. I was inspired by an article in the Flyfisher magazine 2012 publication. The authors Terry and Roxanne Wilson pulled four patterns from the “Book of the Black Bass\,” (1881) by Dr. James A. Henshall. The most iconic figure in the uniquely American sport of bass fishing is Dr. James A. Henshall. A physician and author of the “Book of the Black Bass” (1881) and other works\, the good doctor abandoned his medical practice at the age of 49 to pursue his passion for the piscato-rial sciences. \nHere are the patterns we will tie as time permits. \nHenshall\nWing: light drab (dove)\nHackle: white\nBody: peacock herl\, gold tip\nTail: peacock sword \nPolka\nWing: guinea\nHackle: scarlet\nBody: scarlet floss\, gold rib\nTail: brown and white fibers (goose wing)\n \nOconomowor\nWing: cinnamon woodcock\nHackle: white\nBody: cream floss\, gold rib\nTail: brown deer tail\n \nOriole\nWing: yellow goose\nHackle: black\nBody: black floss\, gold rib and tip\nTail: black and white \nI was drawn to the poetic writings from a time all but forgotten. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and a Master’s in Management of Technology\, both from the University of Minnesota. He has held various engineering and management roles\, primarily in the medical device space in Minnesota\, including Director of Engineering\, prior to creating TroutRoutes. \nZachary started Trout Insights\, Inc. in 2017. President@mffc.org. \n\nLET’S GET CONNECTED!!! \nBy Todd A.Schotts \nHello fellow club members and welcome to another great year of “Featured Tiers” for the Michigan Fly Fishing Club’s Activity Meetings. To kickoff our season of “Featured Tyers\,” I will be kicking this season of myself with the 1st Activity Meeting on September 21st\, 2022. Remember we need tiers\, so if you are interested see me or contact me at GrizzlyFlies@yahoo.com or 248-961-4164. You can tie a fly like a Woolly Bugger or something more extreme\, so let’s get you slinging bobbins as a featured tier!!! \nIn case you are not familiar with me\, here is my fishing report: I am a production tyer; I operate Grizzly Flies by Schottsie. Besides being a production tyer I have been a member of the Michigan Fly Fishing Club for many years now. I have served on the board in various positions\, ran the Annual Smallmouth Outing for 11 years\, the Muskegon River Outing\, supplied articles for the Club’s Newsletter “The Evening Hatch” including the feature “Fly of the Month” for many years. I currently Chair the Guest Tyers for the MFFC Midwest Fly Fishing Expo and organize tyers for our Activity Meetings. Besides all that I am also President of the Huron River Fishing Association and help out with a lot of their activities including the Bass Tournament\, Carp Tournament\, various outings\, and help to organize their Christmas Silent Auction for the club members. I am a Team Member for Norvise\, Pro-Staff for Anadromous Fly Tying Company\, and on the Pro-Team for TFO Rods. Besides all of this\, I still love chasing Bass\, Panfish\, Trout\, Steelhead\, and creating new amazing flies. \nFor our tying night\, we are going to be heading into the arena of articulated flies. When people usually hear “Articulated” they get nervous or scared away from tying them. But actually they are really\, really easy. The fly we are going to be tying is one of my favorite articulated flies\, “The Feather Game Changer.” It is a smaller articulated fly than some of the original styles. Now for myself\, I stayed away from tying these flies for the longest time\, but once I started\, they were so much fun. I naturally added my own flair to it\, and these catch fish!! They have the same movement as jointed spin casting lures\, which they also catch fish; that’s what makes these flies so popular. \nThe one thing to remember when tying these\, the same step you do on the first segment\, you repeat that same step on each section\, getting bigger and bigger to create the visual aspect of a minnow. \nOne thing I have changed up on these flies\, I use a segment from a mop piece for the tail in colors of brown\, chartreuse\, orange\, or blue. The other major change I do is I like using “Off-Center” Bait Hooks. This gives the fly even more movement when stripping in.  You can use any color of Hen Hackle\, but I like using white\, then if needed color with marker or markers to change its appearance.  The filler (Polar Chenille\, Cactus Chenille\, or Chocklett’s Filler Material\, or Chocklett’s Finesse Body Chenille) comes in different colors and sizes. Try to stay with the color as the hackle if possible and size to the size you are tying.  Another trick I like doing is using Glo-Brite Floss when tying down the hackle. It shows up like crazy when the sun hits the flies; just another thing to entice the water inhabitants. \nSo bring your tying tools and supplies\, and I will take us on this awesome adventure of tying articulated flies and remove your fear of tying them.  In case you do not bring supplies\, I will be bringing some. At a very young age he found a passion for capturing the outdoors on video. Soon after finding a fly rod in his dad’s garage\, Nick honed his skills on small stream smallmouth. Spending countless hours driving back roads and searching for new water. This habitual wondering and passion for both fly fishing and filming lead him to places from Alaska to North Carolina were he guided a few seasons.\n\n\nNick will be talking about “Late Summer/Fall Transition Bass”\, providing hints and education on how change their habits as autumn approaches.

DESCRIPTION:Here we go again.  It is well known (and I make no secret about the fact) the Purple Haze is my standard go-to pattern.  It works everywhere.  I have “hazed” in Michigan\, Ohio\, Colorado\, Montana and even Coyhaique\, South America.  My father\, always one to test my theories when free flies are involved\, has taken the patter to other countries with equal success.  To avoid the boredom of actually tying the pattern the same way\, I started working with different materials to see if I could make the pattern easier to tie and still have the same effect.  The results have been mixed.  While the fish\, fortunately\, rarely care\, many of my reject patterns with materials that did not make the cut have been relegated to family (who don’t know better or in all likelihood don’t care) or trees (who have never complained).  The materials I have settled on still resemble the Purple Haze (nothing more than a purple Adams) but allow for quicker tying and a sturdier fly.  My “go to” material is the Puglisi EP (UV) fibers.  They not only create a great visible post\, but also form the body of the fly\, cutting down on the need for additional body material. \n  \nThe next pattern is from our second to last Banquet speaker\, Phil Rowley.  Phil demonstrated this pattern which I would colloquially call a bead head caddis variant tied on a jig hook.  The jig hook gives the fly a different balance point while the tungsten bead provides weight and action in the water. The pattern does not really imitate anything\, but the color\, weight and action of the fly make it irresistible to fish.  During a difficult fishing day in Coyhaique\, which is pretty much every day\, I pretty much gave up and just tied one for because nothing else was working.  The wind was insane\, you could literally lift your rod and the wind would carry the line 40 feet in the air (I have video if anyone wants to see this). Dry flies were just not in the cards.  The guide was exasperated going through patterns trying to find something that would work.  On a lark\, I pulled out the Pink Hog\, tied it on and took a shot at it.  A cast or two later and – fish on… I caught a few more on the same pattern and the guide just couldn’t resist asking what I was using.  I showed him the pattern and he looked exasperated.  He told me that the fly didn’t resemble anything the fish would eat\, but hey it worked so let’s keep using it.
