SUMMARY:Speaker Meeting - Alexa Blankenship
DESCRIPTION:[PLEASE NOTE ZOOM MEETING ONLY DUE TO WEATHER FORECAST] \nFebruary’s Speaker Meeting welcomes Alexa Blankenship from the Detroit River Western Lake Erie Cooperative Weed Management Area speaking about “Invasive Species 101: What to Look for and How you can Help.” \nPer Alexa\, “The best part of my job is the daily work. I spend 90% of the late spring\, summer\, and autumn afield. I am hiking\, wading\, or kayaking nearly everyday\, and I usually get to see all sorts of wildlife (I am also an avid birder) and be in areas that are not usually visited by humans. Not to mention that I get to see firsthand the changes in an ecosystem where I have helped remove invasive species.” \n“I think the most critical thing I want to impart on my audiences is how fragile these ecosystems can be\, and how important it is that the entire community works together to reduce the establishment and prevent the spread of invasive species. Small activities and efforts in our daily lives can be so helpful to prevention and spread. I believe the saying goes ‘It’s not one person {preventing invasive species} perfectly\, it’s everyone {preventing the spread} imperfectly.'” \nA Strike Team Technician for Detroit River Western Lake Erie Cooperative Weed Management Area\, since 2018\, Alexa Blankenship earned her degree in Biology: Natural Resources from Central Michigan University.  She held prior positions in Texas and Alaska before moving back to Michigan. \n  \n\nTopic: MFFC Speaker Mtg\nTime: Feb 2\, 2022 07:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)\n \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84885323602?pwd=Q1NwSkc5T2g5akRYemtHRU13YU5TUT09\n \nMeeting ID: 848 8532 3602\nPasscode: 922085\nOne tap mobile\n+16465588656\,\,84885323602#\,\,\,\,*922085# US (New York)\n+13017158592\,\,84885323602#\,\,\,\,*922085# US (Washington DC)

SUMMARY:Activities Meeting - Bruce Strachan Fly Tying
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 MFFC Striper Outing Experience \nBy Bruce Strachan \n I tied Bucktail Deceivers\, Surf Candies\, Zonkers and Bucktail Clausers\, all in sizes 1/0 to 4/0\,  for our inaugural MFFC Striper Trip only to find out this Silverside Spearing pattern on a mere #1 or #2  size saltwater hook was my “go-to fly.” Captain Jack Balant\, our lead guide\, set this choice that caught Blues and Albies for me. Heed the old lessons … follow your guide’s instructions and take note that small flies do catch big fish! This pattern information is the courtesy of Stone River Outfitter.  If you don’t tie flies\, call them up and buy a few. \n The Long Island fishery for Stripers\, Blues and Albies calls for flies that “match the hatch” of a seemingly endless list of prey fish. Depending on the season\, you will encounter squid\, mullet\, silversides\, anchovies\, herring\, worms\, etc\, etc.  Fly Fisherman’s Guide to Saltwater Prey by Aaron J. Adams\, Ph.D. offers detailed descriptions and fly patterns of these and many more saltwater prey.  Flyfisher’s Guide to the Northeast Coast by Phil Shook is an excellent introduction to where\, when and how to fish the Connecticut and Rhode Island coast of Long Island Sound. \n Enjoy tying this pattern then go East! \n  \n \nStone River Outfitters EZ Silverside Spearing \n(for Northeast Striped Bass\, Bonito\, False Albacore) \nVideo Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9f_p8ll2hg \nHook:  Mustad C68S sizes 1/0-02 or similar * \nThread: White Danvilles 140denier Flymaster Plus or similar \nWing: Select white and olive bucktail \nLateral Line: Opal Mirage Flashabou or similar \nBody: Natural/medium EZ Body tubing \nEyes: 1/8 inch Silver epoxy eyes \nFinish: Liquid Fushion clear urethane glue ** \n* Preferred size for the 2021 MFFC Striper Outing was #1 or #2 saltwater hooks \n** Clear two-part 5 minute or Clear UV based adhesives i.e. Clear Cure Goo \nDOWNLOAD A COPY OF THE ABOVE PATTERN \n\n  \nTopic: MFFC Activity Meeting\nTime: Jan 19\, 2022 07:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)\n \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89461058702?pwd=RzFRWldvYVJFRFVOSEdWa2FmLzFvZz09\n \nMeeting ID: 894 6105 8702\nPasscode: 653693\nOne tap mobile\n+13126266799\,\,89461058702#\,\,\,\,*653693# US (Chicago)\n+16465588656\,\,89461058702#\,\,\,\,*653693# US (New York)

SUMMARY:Activities Meeting - Chris Hunter Featured Tyer
DESCRIPTION:Here we go again.  It is well known (and I make no secret about the fact) the Purple Haze is my standard go-to pattern.  It works everywhere.  I have “hazed” in Michigan\, Ohio\, Colorado\, Montana and even Coyhaique\, South America.  My father\, always one to test my theories when free flies are involved\, has taken the patter to other countries with equal success.  To avoid the boredom of actually tying the pattern the same way\, I started working with different materials to see if I could make the pattern easier to tie and still have the same effect.  The results have been mixed.  While the fish\, fortunately\, rarely care\, many of my reject patterns with materials that did not make the cut have been relegated to family (who don’t know better or in all likelihood don’t care) or trees (who have never complained).  The materials I have settled on still resemble the Purple Haze (nothing more than a purple Adams) but allow for quicker tying and a sturdier fly.  My “go to” material is the Puglisi EP (UV) fibers.  They not only create a great visible post\, but also form the body of the fly\, cutting down on the need for additional body material. \n  \nThe next pattern is from our second to last Banquet speaker\, Phil Rowley.  Phil demonstrated this pattern which I would colloquially call a bead head caddis variant tied on a jig hook.  The jig hook gives the fly a different balance point while the tungsten bead provides weight and action in the water. The pattern does not really imitate anything\, but the color\, weight and action of the fly make it irresistible to fish.  During a difficult fishing day in Coyhaique\, which is pretty much every day\, I pretty much gave up and just tied one for because nothing else was working.  The wind was insane\, you could literally lift your rod and the wind would carry the line 40 feet in the air (I have video if anyone wants to see this). Dry flies were just not in the cards.  The guide was exasperated going through patterns trying to find something that would work.  On a lark\, I pulled out the Pink Hog\, tied it on and took a shot at it.  A cast or two later and – fish on… I caught a few more on the same pattern and the guide just couldn’t resist asking what I was using.  I showed him the pattern and he looked exasperated.  He told me that the fly didn’t resemble anything the fish would eat\, but hey it worked so let’s keep using it. Who knows why it worked\, but it did\, and no complaints from me.  And that’s my mantra\, it’s not always about matching the hatch.  Sometimes it just experimenting with something that looks edible. \n  \n \nHunter’s Mutant Haze \nHook: Size 14-18 \nThread: 8/0 – purple \nTail: Moose body \nBody: purple thread over the excess Puglisi material body \nParachute post: Puglisi EP Fiber (UV) \nHackle: purple grizzly \n  \nPink Hog \nHook: Umpqua C400BL (or Saber 109011) \nBead: Slotted tungsten\, metallic light pink \nTail: Harline Flash Accent \nRib: UTC Ultrawire Red (brassie size) \nBody: Hairline natural fur dubbing or Antron (golden stone\, olive or orange) \n\nTopic: 10-27 MFFC Mtg\nTime: Oct 27\, 2021 07:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)\n \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88547116489?pwd=SjB3V0lERnhKNmF4TUZjN0Y1UTIxdz09\n \nMeeting ID: 885 4711 6489\nPasscode: 354356\nOne tap mobile\n+16465588656\,\,88547116489#\,\,\,\,*354356# US (New York)\n+13017158592\,\,88547116489#\,\,\,\,*354356# US (Washington DC)

SUMMARY:Speaker Meeting - Todd Schotts
DESCRIPTION:Todd Schotts of Grizzly Flies\, will be speaking on late season terrestrials. \nLate Season Terrestrials\, what are they? They are certain terrestrial patterns that are abundant from the dog days of August into September\, October\, and continue into early November. In this presentation I will go over these specific insects and how to look for them; what type of conditions they thrive in and conditions they don’t; techniques for rigging your gear; and the best way to fish them. I will go through various fly patterns and help you figure out how to tie them to best represent all those bugs. There will be hand-outs to take home\, and a surprise after the power point presentation. \nTodd A. Schotts is production/custom tyer from Southeastern Michigan. He grew up on the west side of the state in Twin Lake\, attended Holton High School\, Ferris State\, and served in the Marine Corps before moving to southeast Michigan. He is a member of the Huron River Fishing Association and the Michigan Fly Fishing Club. During his tenure at the MFFC he contributed “Fly of the Month” articles for over 7 years\, and was a contributing author since 2005.  He currently Chairs the Guest Tyers for the Midwest Fly Fishing Expo and volunteers for various club functions\, including the member\, youth public and Boy Scout schools. Todd owns and operates a production fly tying company “Grizzly Flies by Schottsie” that he started more than 18 years ago and is the founder of “Michigan Bobbin Slingers (a fly tyers) page on Facebook that is dedicated to the art and craft of Fly Tying. SUMMARY:Activities Meeting - Tie Along with Al Haxton & Sybil
DESCRIPTION:Watch as Al Haxton walks everyone through these great patterns! Sybil will be tying on the close up camera. \n——————————————————————————————————————————————————————– \nFor years I have been a proponent of “emerger” patterns. I have enjoyed tying and fishing these patterns ever since an old vendor from our shows in the 1980s and 1990s showed me his developed pattern called the ACE. That’s ACE for Attitude Correct Emerger. That guy\, Mike Freeland\, of Freeland Outfitters used to have a shop in Waterford.    \nSo at February 24ths Tie Along\, we will tie a couple different emergers\, both newer patterns\, but using one of Mike’s tricks with the hooks. \nThe Deer Hair Emerger \nHook-dry fly hook bent or Klinkhamer bent hook\, size 14 \nThread-tan size 8/0 \nWing-deer hair \nShuck-Z-lon tan \nBody-tan turkey biot \nThorax-tan Hares ear dubbing \nKlinkhamer Emerger \nHook-dry fly hook bent or Klinkhamer bent hook\, size 14 \nThread-tan size 8/0 \nPost-para post \nBody-tan super fine dubbing \nThorax-peacock herl \nHackle-Blue Dun dry fly hackle sized for hook \n  \nThese patterns\, or similar\, are on U-Tube:\n \nHere is the Deer Hair Emerger link:          www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ABafzWjFDU \nHere is the Klinkhamer link:                     youtu.be/sTKCB6R3T_c \nBoth of these links are shown in Barry Ord Clarke’s book The Feather Benders Flytying Techniques. \nThis is truly a great book and I highly recommend it. \nAl \n——————————————————————————————————————————————— \n\n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83284533014?pwd=V241Ty96Mnc0TCtDaHQ3NlkxcURkUT09\n \nMeeting ID: 832 8453 3014\nPasscode: 984481\nOne tap mobile\n+13126266799\,\,83284533014#\,\,\,\,*984481# US (Chicago)\n+16465588656\,\,83284533014#\,\,\,\,*984481# US (New York)

DESCRIPTION:Come Tie Along with Dan Walker! \nHello fellow club members and it is the Holiday Season already. It is unbelievable that this year is almost over\, but probably most of us are happy it is. So for some holiday fun and cheer\, we are bringing Dan Walker to the vise to tie a great pattern series of the “Opal Minnow.” \nIf you’re not too familiar with Dan\, he is a long time member of the Michigan Fly Fishing Club. He is one of the members who usually has a fishing report to give. When we used to have regular meetings\, he was always tying egg flies\, or some other kind of pattern\, wherever he was sitting. Also\, he has appeared as the “Featured Tyer” program in the past. He is a master at the vise for sure\, and he is a fish magnet when he goes out fishing. \nHOOK:  #8 to #4. Down eye standard shank fly hook or a jig hook \nBEAD HEAD:  Silver 4.0mm to 5.5mm sized for the hook \nBODY THREAD:  Chartreuse is best\, or white \nTAIL:  2 strands of Opal Mirage Flashabou \nBODY:  Opal Mirage wrapped over chartreuse thread base \nHEAD THREAD:  Fire Orange 140D or Uni 6/0 \nWING:  Sparse white bucktail tied in the gap\, with small fire orange collar against the bead head \nWING FLASH:  One strand of Opal Mirage folded to each side of the wing. \n—————————————————————————————————– \nZoom Login Information: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/87993988668?pwd=OWlObUpUV01QSkFtdzE4dXlwcEdKUT09 \nMeeting ID: 879 9398 8668 \nPasscode: 768133 \nOne tap mobile \n+13126266799\,\,87993988668#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,768133# US (Chicago)

SUMMARY:FFF Fly Tying Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are requested for our booth at the Great Lakes Fly Fishing Show. We set up a booth for kids to learn how to tie a fly. We are a very popular booth with many returning customers. We generally tie various designs of wooly buggers. They are very easy to tie and easy to show a kid how to do it. We will teach you how to do it. \nContact: Spencer Vanderhoof \nPlease sign up to volunteer so we can get the list of volunteers to show registration the day before the set up.
