SUMMARY:September Speaker Meeting - Jonathan Chizmadia
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Alaska’s Bristol Bay and his time guiding at NakNek River Camp on the NakNek River and Katmai National Park. \n\nAs a lifelong angler and outdoorsman\, USCG Master Captain Jon Chizmadia grew up in Otisville\, Michigan where he spent his time fishing light weight conventional gear in the muddy lakes and streams of the Flint River watershed. He picked up a fly rod in his early teens and became infatuated with the idea of teasing fish into striking flies crafted of natural materials imitating natural food sources. He began tying and selling flies commercially while working at his local sporting goods retailer using saved funds to travel to the famous coldwater streams of Northern Michigan where he fell in love with Michigan’s coldwater fisheries. \nAfter his basic schooling Jon joined the Marine Corp and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He returned to Michigan post service to attend college in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where he  took to the woods and waters of the Superior State rediscovering fly fishing as a means of tranquility and healing. \nAs a working professional\, Jon traveled and fished throughout the U.S. and Canada learning different techniques to incorporate back home in Michigan.  He is always ready to try something new and shares what he has learned along the way.  He supports several angling organizations including Trout Unlimited\, Casting For Recovery\, and Fly Fishers International. \nToday Jon lives in St. Joseph\, MI where he is an independent guide and owner of St. Joe Angler LLC.  He fishes for everything from Carp to Brook Trout.  He fishes the waters of Northern Michigan as a guide with the team at True North Trout and annually spends time in King Salmon\, AK where he hosts and guides clients through Alaska’s Nak Nek River Camp. \nWhat Jon loves most about fly fishing is the constant learning and people he has been able to connect with through the shared passion.  When not on the water he can probably be found in the northern MI woods. Behind a bird dog and alongside his son.

SUMMARY:Wisconsin Driftless Outing
DESCRIPTION:Sept 20\, 2026 – Sept 24\, 2026 (5 nights)\nJoin us for fishing the renowned “driftless area” in western Wisconsin\, approximately a 500 mile driving distance from our metro Detroit area.  There are 13\,000 miles of streams and creeks in the near vicinity of Viroqua\, Wisconsin\, offering easy wading\, an abundance of native trout\,  and a scenic beauty that would be a photographer’s delight. \n____________________________________ \n \nLocation: \nThe Driftless area refers to about 24\,000 sq. miles capturing SW Wisconsin\, SE Minnesota\, NE Iowa\, and NW Illinois.  It is an area that was untouched by glacier flows that occurred thousands of years ago.  It’s a topography characterized by steeply forested hills\, deeply carved river valleys\, spring fed waterfalls\, and some of the coldest trout streams in the country. The area is not the recipient of the leveling and the typical glacier deposits (salt\, clay\, sand \, gravel\, boulders\, etc.) known as “drift”…….hence the name “driftless.”  An estimated 85% of the driftless area resides in Wisconsin.  The central hub of the fly fishing activity lies in the vicinity of the town of Viroqua – the “Grayling” of Wisconsin. \nDates: \nSunday Sep 20\, 2026 through Thurs Sept 24. Departing Friday\, Sept 25.  (5 nights lodging) \nLodging: \nNatureNooks Retreat  (www.naturenooksretreat.com) \nLocated about 9 miles east of Viroqua\, on the West Fork of the Kickapoo River.  Visit the website for a visual of the property and its amenities. Cost per person per night could vary from $50 – $70 depending on total attendees. \nTransportation: \nDriving distance is approximately 500 miles from metro Detroit. \nMeals \nBreakfasts will be provided each morning and brown bag lunches made available daily.  In addition\, three dinner meals will be planned.  Plan to eat out for dinners on the remaining days. \nGuides \nGuides (for at least a half day) are encouraged and will be at your own expense.  Rates are published at www.driftlessangler.com \nTrip Budget: \nBoarding (5 nights lodging at Nature Nooks Retreat) (no taxes) \nFood (5 breakfasts\, 4 brown bag lunches\, 3 dinners) \nTOTAL:     $450 estimated (More specific cost will be forthcoming.) \nAdditional costs to be incurred include:  Guide service\,  misc. meals\, Wisconsin fishing license ($27.50 for first time out of state buyers)\, transportation costs (gas and toll charges). \nAction Needed: \nAs we solidify lodging agreements\, a deposit of $50 will soon be requested. As of now\, the trip may accommodate up to 16 members\, utilizing lodging in addition to Nature Nooks Retreat. \nClub Contact: \nJerry Deputat  9250 N. Rushton Rd\, South Lyon\, MI  48178  (248)798-3089 \n
