Ray Schmidt, owner of Double SS Outfitters, passed away today October 28, 2025.
Originally from the small town of Onaway in Northern Michigan, Ray carved out a long and distinguished career as a fishing guide, fly tiers, fly shop owner, and fly fishing travel guide.
After selling Schmidt Outfitters in Wellston, MI, he and his wife Kate Smith started Double SS Outfitters in Bear Lake, MI. Ray, of course, provided the local hand tied flies, many of which were his own designs. He and Kate also coordinated fly fishing destination trips to Belize, Chile, Alaska and other coveted venues.
Ray died this morning following complications from surgery.
He was a past speaker and friend of the Michigan Fly Fishing Club.
