The Michigan Fly Fishing Club (MFFC), founded in 1970, is Southeast Michigan’s premier organization for fly fishing enthusiasts and those hoping to learn more about the sport and its many facets — casting, fly tying, rod building, places to fish and fly fishing-related art and literature.

Our 400+ members represent all levels of fly fishing experience, from beginner to expert.  We are a family- and youth- friendly organization. We offer programs for all ages and skill levels.

While we love casting, fly tying, rod building, fishing and telling “dubious” fishing stories.  From September to May meet two times a month. The first meeting features an guest speaker. The second meeting includes featured fly tying, beginning fly tying (tools provided), and available casting instruction. During the summer months, we meet once a month for a speaker presentation.

What does the Michigan Fly Fishing Club Do?

Educational Programs

Our experts are club members and guest speakers who are willing teachers and mentors who will enhance your learning experience of this exciting and relaxing sport.

If you want to learn to build a rod, we can show you how. If you’re interested in fly tying, we offer beginner and intermediate instruction. We also offer fly casting instruction for all skill levels.

Meetings

Each meeting starts with a briefing about upcoming events and the ever-popular question “Who’s been fishing?”

The first meeting of each month typically features a speaker.

If you want to share your knowledge with others, the club runs schools for members and non-members alike. If you just plain want to fish, the club offers a variety of outings throughout the year.

First and foremost we are a fishing club and the opportunities to meet and fish with members of our club are nearly endless.  And, as you might imagine, there’s no shortage of fishing stories.

Hosts of the Midwest Fly Fishing Expo

Our signature event is the Midwest Fly Fishing Exposition. Each spring for over 40 years, the club’s members come together to present this nationally recognized celebration of the sport of Fly Fishing.

Held at the Sports & Exposition Center at Macomb Community College’s South Campus in Warren, Michigan, this show has made it possible for the MFFC to bring the Great Lakes area a variety of nationally and internationally acclaimed fly anglers, fly tiers, artists and authors as well as the newest and best product offerings that our sport has to offer.  The Expo offers an array of programs, demos, and services for anglers ranging from those new to the sport to those with decades of experience.

The MFFC believes that young fly fishing enthusiasts represent the future of our sport and we make special efforts to make youth-focused activities a key part of the Expo.

Conservation

Thanks to years of support from fly fishing enthusiasts for the Midwest Fly Fishing Exposition, the MFFC has been able to channel over $400,000 to habitat restoration, conservation and education programs across the state of Michigan and throughout the United States.
