Here’s what to know about rod weight.
As rod manufacturers competitively “up their game” the goal is for the fly fisher to get more line out.
But what does that have to do with rod weight? A stiffer rod throws more line right? Not necessarily. Rod weights, although labeled as 5 wt., 6 wt., or 7wt, etc. aren’t necessarily what you signed up for. Many rod manufacturers’ make their rods so stiff that an average caster needs to overweight the line to achieve their “normal” casting distance.
Keep in mind too that a stiffer rod requires a shorter casting stroke. Fast action rods require a more precise casting stroke.
And it becomes even more complicated than that. Not only can the material, line, and rod length adjust the caster’s line choice, so too can the rod bend. Not to mention, “There is no correlation between price and performance” according to Todd Tanner, the author of The Truth about fly rods.
