There is so much in store for November Activities night!
Some of my fishing hours are spent in Canada in search of Walleye, Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass. We have pestered these fish with spoons, plugs, and nightcrawler harnesses for years. For sure these methods are successful, and old habits are hard to break, so every year we utilize the same methods. But in the spirit of pushing the envelope a bit, I am itching to snag some of these smallmouth with a fly.
We didn’t see these bass hitting bait on the surface, so my thought was to start searching for these guys with streamers. Off to YouTube I went and found a video “Bass Top 5 Streamers.” I figured this was a good place to start, as it highlights these streamers being used in Canada.
Today I am tying with you, two of the five that look interesting to me, and hopefully to the bass as well. One is the very famous streamer — The Clouser Minnow, and the other is Hud’s Bushwacker.
I started tying flies when I was a teenager in the Catskill style — classic dries, wets and streamers. I got away from it a bit, as things like college, wife, and kids all got in the way of fly tying. When the idea of fishing Smallmouth with flies piqued my interest, I found that the whole hobby has adopted a slew of new styles of hooks, presentations, materials and techniques.
So now that I have entirely too much invested in all of these new synthetics, a nice Clouser rod, reels, boxes of hooks, and a few new spools of thread … I would like to take some time and tie a few with you.
