From Aug 4 through Aug 7, I stayed at the Gates Au Sable Lodge for R&R and a little fishing. This a tough time to stay on the river. The Au Sable AC was straining to keep up with temperatures close to 90° with humidity in the high 90’s.

I was dying to go north and to try my new Hardy 9ft 4wt. I found this rod was a little stiffer than what I am accustomed to. Luckily it all worked out as I hoped. This rod will be one of the ones I will take on my next trip to Oregon.

I was fishing below Guides Rest and managed to pick up 5 small trout. No matter the size they are always fun to catch.

Wading downstream I crossed a large underwater grassy area and moved approximately 6 nice browns. I knew the trout I moved would not be interest in anything I had to throw at them so I kept on moving. In this same area, I saw the largest brown trout that I have ever seen except in fish hatcheries. This was the trout that we all dream of catching. A trout this large did not get that way by being stupid. You can bet in a couple of months I will be dragging streamers through this area to catch this monster.

I was going to add the GPS coordinates for the area, however I did not want to make it too easy.

Back To Oregon

Now regressing back to my last piece regarding Oregon… If anyone is interested as a group to visit Oregon Please feel free to contact me at  4tjdoyle54@gmail.com. I will contact the fly shops to see what lodging and river fishing can be put together. A comped a trip is not my goal. I most likely will not be able to go. But I feel Sisters should be seen before it is radically changed by warming. The people in Sisters are great and would provide a nice trip.
